New X-Men 114, 2001
The opening page of Grant Morrison, and Frank Quietly’s New X-Men run. This is probably my favorite first page of a comic, ever. Cyclops and Wolverine kicking the shit out of a Sentinel. These 2 guys are the X-Men really, and this image encapsulates their character just right.
What an awesome run it was. My 2 favorite eras of the X-Men are this run, and the Claremont/Lee years, and they both came at the perfect age for me. I will get to the Jim Lee & Claremont stuff in another post.
This was cutting edge, cerebral X-Men. Morrison was really trying to evolve the idea of what the mutant, and the X-Men could be for a new century. The man can play with an idea and warp it into so many new positions you did not think of before. It is shame that there was no one that could run with it when he left.
And the Quietly art was completely different from what other mainstream artist were doing at the time. The man puts character, and energy in his drawings.
Besides their New X-Men run, I would highly suggest you take a look for their We3 mini series, about a house cat, dog, and rabbit that after being transformed into cyborg killing machines for the US government, escape and try to make it back to their old homes. It is a great story, and heart breaking at times.

I have the full run.It was the first time I actually followed an X-Men book. As I sell off big chunks of my collection I can never bring myself to list it. Just such a perfect run of comics that happened to come out during a formative part of my life
